“Convenience Store Woman” by Sayaka Murata captures the nostalgic atmosphere of a convenience store that is a large part of everyday culture in Japan. It challenges the social construct of being “normal” and “successful” in modern day society. My intention with this redesign was to bring the convenience store atmosphere to life.
I used 3D type mixed in with products from a store to achieve the effect of the title traveling on a conveyor belt, running across the back and front of the book cover.
I simulated fluorescent lighting on the side flaps, the “About the Author” section as a name tag, and a receipt as an innovative way to showcase the book reviews all enhance the “Convenience Store Woman” feeling of being there in person.
